How do you avoid clichs when writing

How do you avoid clichés when writing?

Most writers, myself included, fall back to clichés for six reasons:
#1: We restrict ourselves to one school of writers.
What if you only ever heard one language? How would that limit your dictionary of possible sounds? Just so, a writer fails for having too few heroes, not too many.
Variety is a enlarging force.
Encountering new styles and syntax equips us with new lenses.
A good writer must be a cosmopolitan reader.
#2: We lack intimacy with the subject.

There are abstractions and there are experiences.
Say you were to write about Niagara Falls but had never been.
You’d turn to worn expressions about its "mighty flow" and "majestic grandeur".
And no one would care or remember.
If you went for yourself, you’d understand the truer description is simpler and more primal: you feel small in front of it, more from the noise that the sight.
It makes you imagine the awe of an early pioneer hearing the thundering waters at a distance, having no concept of waterfalls of that volume.
Good writing is good story-telling.
And good story-telling requires a living feel and comprehension that can’t come from third-party descriptions.
When we lack our own story, we turn to figures that are common, false, and unpersuasive.
#3: We imitate the art, not the inspiration.
We too often attempt to adopt the style of those who touch us, as opposed to focusing on the nature of the touch itself — which is to chase the wrong thing.
As per Basho, we ought not to follow footsteps, but rather “seek what they sought”.
If we want to write like Maya Angelou, we need to go live with the poor and powerless.
Then we'll hear god's voice as she heard it.
Otherwise we'll write as actors, not conduits.
Our language will be artificial, grasping, cold.
#4: We lack conceptual clarity.

I spent years helping college students with their essays.
Nine out of ten were just a series of long paragraphs in search of a thesis.
The student didn’t understand the subject, so they attempted to write their way to understanding.
What we lack in comprehension, we make up for with complexity.
We throw in phrases that sound plausible, hoping meaning will emerge organically.
It works out about as well throwing a bunch of old computers into a pile and expecting artificial intelligence to form itself from the dead scraps.
#5: We don't edit enough.
We all fix punctuation problems and correct typos, but we rarely put our work on trial.
Good editing should be an intentional prosecution — asking tough questions about originality, clarity, substance, accessibility, and truthfulness.
If it doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t count.
#6: We over-write.
Sometimes we don’t know better.
Sometimes we’re just trying too hard.
But we'd do well with Fowler's advice: "be direct, simple, brief, lucid, and vigorous".
PS – For a great essay on the topic: Mahatma Gandhi coined this term to apply to nonviolent political resistance, but its underlying literal meaning can apply to writing.
If you commit to the truth of your characters and your story and find truth in every line you write, there will be no room for clichés.
Aristotle said, "To say of what is that it is and of what is not that it is not, this is truth.
" Try that.
