How do I start off a novel?
If this is your first novel, begin by writing.
If you find yourself unable to start without a plot, by all means work on that first, but otherwise write and let the story develop naturally.
Chances are, you’ll rewrite your opening many times before the book is finished, and that’s okay.
As others have mentioned, read whenever you’re not writing.
I recommend reading mainly within the genre you’re writing, but take time to branch out with entirely different stories, too.
Be warned though: once you begin reading as a writer, it takes an awfully good book before you can forget you’re reading and become fully submersed in the story.
