Believe it or not, in most cases, a $55/h proposal from a US based provider will beat an $8/h from a non-US one.
For the non-US/UK service providers, the #1 obstacle is competing against the US/UK based contractors regardless of the proposed fee.
This claim is coming from over a decade long experience of competing on the international market, trying to land the high-end contracts in the US.
Because, that’s where they are :)
While there are those searching for cheap stuff, the majority is still looking for the quality.
And even if you can clearly prove your expertize in a certain field, by providing the simple proof of it; you’re most likely to lose the contract over the US/UK based service provider.
It’s just the way it is and it’s something that kept me pushing harder and harder from the Day One.

My suggestion to you is simple: start profiling the clients! Don’t waste time on those looking to buy a brand new BMW for under $20K.
If you’re a US based service provider, you’re already in advantage.
Just make sure to write a compelling cover letter and that’s it.

Trust me; a proposed fee has nothing to do with the decision to hire you if you’re good in what you do.

However, you really cannot expect to land every contract you’re bidding on.
Sometimes, a client will choose a $10/h over a $55/h proposal even if it has the potential to compromise the quality and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Just move on to another opportunity!


As the freelance market has skyrocketed in recent years, it has become a source of potential income for freelancers living in different countries.
Thousands of people are signing up for these websites on daily basis.
Freelancing has become a competitive market to get into if you are not following the norms.

Native English speakers have already an advantage to get projects at higher rates but many people are arguing about non-native English speakers.
They are available at much cheaper prices and with the finest quality possible.
I believe it completely depends upon the mindset of the client.
A client may get their job done at cheaper rates by compromising over quality.
Some clients only prefer native English speakers at higher rates to get quality work.
This is not a thing to be afraid of.
If you are thinking that you are not getting enough work because non-native English speakers are stealing the jobs by providing cheap rates and facing competition then you can decrease your rate per hour.

These are the countries which are the lifeline of the freelancing market.

India, Bangladesh, United States, Pakistan, Philippines, United Kingdom.

Experienced clients are certain about their choices.
They know if the project cost is 100$ then why will they choose a freelancer who is ready to work at 10$? Instead of worrying about other freelancers, try to find out the drawbacks in your profile to become the best choice of freelancers.
Before complaining, make sure you have an intriguing profile to attract the clients and your proposals are meeting the requirements of the client.

Profile – Your profile carries the potential weight to get hired.
Have a decent photo which can represent your personality.

) Computer Programming , Software Development and Web Designing :There are going to be three types of clients.

) They consider you a cost centre and they just need a barely functional app or website as their clients are catering their products to business.

2.
) They don't consider you as a cost centre but they think that computer programming and web designing development is a one time thing.
In this case if they would have hired you they would need you again if they are still solvent .
If it would have been you they could get consistent quality but imagine if they would have hired $6 an hour freelancer the quality of work would have surely been inconsistent and the work would have been delayed .

)The one who want to get a long term worker and don't want to pay health insurance and other overheads but they want value for money – This is the best client and it works best if you project is long term and and you have good project management skills.
Sorry to burst your bubble but Software Development is not a short term gig.

You can hire an Indian or a Brazilian for using a machine learning stack on your website but you cannot sue that bastard if he delays your project or doesn't work according to instructions but you are assured of that person when he is American.

) Long term Job-in disguise of self employment is the best freelancing if you are comfortable in moving out of your country.
You can save 50k instead of 30k per year due to geographical arbitrage.
You can outsource the routine work for $3500 per year and be even more efficient.
You can even become comfortable on working large projects and you can use your ethincity as a brand.

Designing : It could be UI/UX design that can be scaled to hundred thousand users , It can be product design of a flagship product or it could be generic textile designs .
The former client doesn't worry whether the cost is $12000 or $1200 but the latter does.

Writing Video Editing and Movies : Commercial Writing is a combination of entertainment and infotainment.
So are videos and animations.

Who do you think Christopher Nolan is ? Who do you think Leonardo DiCaprio and John Williams are.
They are artists and they are freelancer.

Why should you bother to compete with other freelancers’ fixed prices and hourly rates, in the first place?
For new clients and freelancers, the differences in pricing within the same category and type of work can be shocking.
This is how freelancing works.
If you can find a client to pay you a price, you’re demanding, then just go for it.

Again, focus on your work and priorities.
You don’t have a clue about other freelancers.
What are their skill and experience levels? Where do they live? How much they need to earn for a decent life? There are so many factors that it’s just not worthy of your time to worry about your competitors’ prices.

Some prices are totally acceptable for some freelancers, while others consider them to be unacceptable and even an insult.
That’s why, you have to play your own freelance game!

And when it comes to freelancing, I can do the same job for $200 that you charge $500.
And still I have the more purchasing power than you.
Because a meal in our country costs 5 times lesser than your country.
